How Long Does Liquid Waterproofing Last?

Date Published: May 15, 2022

Faulty waterproofing is one of the top causes of building defects in the UK today, leading to many insurance claims relating to building damage.

While liquid waterproofing dramatically reduces the risk of water ingress, its life cycle will depend largely on the quality of the material used and the installers’ experience.

In this article, we cover the main causes of failed waterproofing and the importance of correct installation.

Why Does Waterproofing Fail?

In any project, the waterproofing system is most likely to fail at a few specific points.

If waterproofing with sheet membranes, in particular, there are numerous weak points in the form of seams.

Whether that is the joining of individual sheets or to accommodate a structural detail.

At these points, the solid sheet membrane is compromised – even when joints in the membrane are sealed, the risk of leaks is increased.

Liquid waterproofing is superior to sheet membrane because it is less prone to weak points.

As a monolithic liquid-applied system, WIDOPAN has no joins.

Any protrusions, movement joints or awkward areas can be coated seamlessly as part of the waterproofing application.

As long as the waterproofing resin is correctly applied, the area will have full protection against water and moisture penetration.

The Importance Of Selecting The Right Installer

Despite liquid waterproofing being a superior solution to protect against water damage, there are still weak points to consider.

Namely, the risk of uneven application.

The strength of liquid waterproofing comes from the fact that it is a singular layer.

However, weak points can be created if the liquid membrane isn’t applied evenly.

With this in mind, it’s essential to use an experienced contractor in any liquid waterproofing project.

At WIDOPAN, we provide training sessions at our Installer Training Centre to give contractors the knowledge they need to become fully certified WIDOPAN approved installers.

When you use an installer who has undertaken rigorous training, you’ll ensure your project meets the highest standard.

How Long Does Liquid Waterproofing Last?

The longevity of your waterproofing system relies heavily on the product you have selected and the installer carrying out the work.

In general, most liquid waterproofing systems should last you a minimum of 10 years before you need to renew them.

That being said, higher quality products installed by a quality contractor can last much longer.

At WIDOPAN, we have been manufacturing our own waterproofing systems for over 50 years.

We have a robust research and development process that involves rigorous testing to create premium waterproofing solutions.

We are so confident in the durability and effectiveness of WIDOPAN products that we offer certificated guarantees ranging from 10 to 25 years.
